Read it.. try out some of the examples. The authors are also on this list.

The flex 1.5 docs arehere:

And start coding! There are many blogs out there, I have them all linked off my site: http://www.cflex.net, and http://www.flexauthority.com is also another good resource.

I find the only way to learn is to build things for real. And one of the easiest ways to learn is to look at existing samples. Flex comes with the sample explorer which you've seen, and then there'sa bunch of sample apps that people are putting out there.

Okay, newbie here - to the list and to Flex. I have gone through all
of the articles and examples on DevNet. I feel like I can open an
mxml file and pretty well understand whats going on - but going from
there to actually writing an app is another thing.

So, are there any resources that people would suggest? Maybe even
more specifically - utilizing Flex and CFMX together? I looked on
Amazon, but it appears the only books for Flex are for the 1.0
version. Is there any information available for the 1.5 version?
