Other than Jimmy's note, you approach looks ok.

How far in is your data getting? Trace something out of the model, if
the data is there, then trace something out of the data provider.

Thanks for your answer but it still doesn't work....:-(
My guess is that the binding between my custom dataProvider and the
model is not working. I did that with the 'source' attribute but I am
not sure that actually works...
