Eric. We are using XMLSockets in one of the engagements that I am currently working on. We are in development phase at the moment and are looking to use sockets to be able to push real time status information to the client. The goal is to support around 2000 simultaneous connections. While the app is looking to be built in Flash for this version, Flex was fully capable in handling this requirement. My thought would be if you abstract out your service calls and have the application setup with a series of responder methods (onResult) to the XMLSocket calls you can very easily have both stateful and stateless communication with your server to optimize you middle tier interaction.
You can email me off line if you like. Since we haven't deployed out to QA yet I can't specifically talk to the issues you noted below. At least not yet. We are looking at using XMLSocket and a data push model to improve some real-time aspects our application. Has anyone had real experience using XMLSOcket with a large set of users? I guess I'm looking for cases where it doesn't work (e.g., firewall issues) or doesn't work well. Yahoo! Groups Links Yahoo!
