Yes, and no.

All code that is needed to talk to the back-end is compiled into the SWF.

However, certain things could cause it not to work:
- if the SWF is run from a different domain, security restrictions prevent it from working
- if your back-end requires HTTPS authentication
- if your back-end does checks to see the referrer, true domain, a session ID needed for a webservice call beyond a simple login, or any other check to determine the SWF, and tells the SWF to piss off
- your keep timeouts on, and the SWF times out, rendering it useless (unless someone has a SWF decompiler and removes the check)

JesterXL,

Could you please expand on your statement?

I am trying to create an app that uses web services to manage data.  Are you saying it is possible to compile this app into a SWF, give it to Joe Blow, and the app will run without issues?  All they would need is the Flash player?

To clarify, you don't need Flex server to communicate with back-end data servvices.

The SWF can still hit your backend without issue as long as it's deployed from the same domain.  You don't need Flex server to ensure that.

Yes, you can compile to SWF (and SWC), but any data services will require the Flex back-end to communicate with.

Regarding pricing, 12K is just the list price.  Contact the OEM/ISV sales group.

Rick,

Just to clarify

You can NOT compile Flex into a SWF?

And

Any business my company wants to sell this application to needs to spend 12K before they can run a Flex application?

David:

Yes, Flex needs Flex to run <g>.

Call Macromedias OEM/ISV sales organization and talk with them about your needs and pricing constraints.  They seem very flexible and willing to accommodate unique usage scenarios compared to other OEMs Ive worked with.

Subject: [flexcoders] Questions, Questions

Hello Everyone,

I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to answer my questions about Flex.  Most were basic, new user questions, and I really appreciate all the help.

I have been researching Flex for an application my company wants to build and I we have come across a point of contention price.   My company now wants this application to be independent instead of integrated into a bigger solution, and the idea of hosting is going out the window.

So  I have 2 starter questions

  1. Can a Flex application be compiled into a SWF file, or made to run independent of the server?
  2. Does a Flex application need to be hosted on a Flex server?

Thanks,

David T.
