webservice is a technology that allows 2 (usually remote) systems to
communicate with each other independent of what language/platform they
are running on. The information that is traded is XML and the protocol
is usually SOAP.

An example of web services is if I wanted to start my own website that
automatically showed the current weather. When the page was called, my
Java servlet, for example, would call a web service that would return
me an XML doc with the data I need to display. It's a way for
indepedent businesses to easily communicate.
