I have implemented a similar logic to create records through cell editing. Row based editing means that all the editable cells in a row are in edit mode and user can tab through them entering values and save all the changes made in a single request to server. When the user saves the record the row returns to normal mode i.e. just displaying data. There is no single cell edits.
Hope this clarifies my requirements.
