I think the OP really wants it to be in a renderer, which has slightly
different rules

A renderer is given explicitWidth before it is measured, and for text
flow components, it should set the with of that component then take its
measurements.

You can set it to 100%, or to a binding like:

<vbox id="bar">
  <text id="txt" width="{vbox.width}"/>
</vbox>

Either will work just make sure that you set it :)

If you're doing that and it's not wrapping, you may need
collapseWhite="true" (or something named like that) on your mx:Text,
depending on how you've set up your html!

        Any other idea?

        I'm trying to set the textarea's height when i load it but it
doesnt
        seem to be getting the right height.

        I tested a simple example like the following one and if you run
it you
        will see that when you open its bigger than the text but when
you
        start typing it gets back to the right size.

        <?xml version="1.0"?>
        <mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml
