I've just uploaded a new example to my site, which is an extended DataGrid with a styleFunction added similar to the one that AdvancedDataGrid has. This also includes a StyleableRenderer class, which is a simple itemRenderer that extends UIComponent. I know that the biggest hurdle I had when it came to making UIComponent based renderers was trying to find a simple example to look at that I could understand.
