acrobat.com is using transitions to ease the view from one state to another. There's nothing stopping you from doing the same. The real trick to making slick interfaces is skill and experience, so it takes time. I'm still working on it.
You shouldn't be too hard on yourself. Some people make interfaces look simple - they didn't acheive that skill on day one.
