No, you do not do that. You just assign the array to the dataGrid's dataProvider property.
You never work directly with columns or rows of the datagrid. DataGrid and List and the other data driven controls are just that, "data driven". You always work with the dataProvider. There is not a one to one relationship between the rows of the dataGrid and the elements in your data. Google for: flex itemRenderer recycle.
