Most of the time when I do any page transitions I take a bitmap of the current page and display that over everything. Then swap the content below this. Finally applying the effect to the bitmap. If you need the 'next' page to do the effect (like a slide in effect) then you take two bitmaps. Using bitmaps this way isn't always the simplest, but it can help with performance of the effect.
