I think the real problem is that you are trying to control loading behaviour and the display at the same time. I would delegate the loading to a seperate class (an image loader) that would be responsible for loading all the images and when an individual image has loade add the item to the display component. You can then have control over how many images are being loaded concurrently at any one time.

I don't think there's an "out of the box" solution for you, though there are some bulk loader classes about.
