Not a simple question.
The issue with performance and datagrid is rendering. Poorly optimized item renderers are the primary problem. A large number of accesses of XML nodes has also been shown to be problematic. Understand that what matters is what is visible on screen. Beyond that, there will be no significant difference in performance for large data sets. Data service latency and user experience are additional issues to consider.
