Yeah I have a bit of an opinion on those pesky web services :) I agree with most of this thread. Stick with open standards, use best of breed services (I consider Hibernate/Spring a service not a framework per se), and keep extensability in mind.
Honestly with Flex2 the ability to justify an open sources Flex application is pretty viable. As for the Java community.... I'd be a good candidate to be that evangelist.
