Masking the SWF itself is best, but you could do:
createEmptyMovieClip("mask_mc");
mask_mc.beginFill(0x000000);
mask_mc.lineTo(widthOfThing, 0);
mask_mc.lineTo(widthOfThing, heightOfThing);
mask_mc.lineTo(0, heightOfThing);
mask_mc.lineTo(0, 0);
mask_mc.endFill();
yourThing.setMask(mask_mc);

Can I import a swf into flex and have the swf mask its self? objects
outside the document size is displaying. Or do I need to mask them in
