Is there a way to change the "item" label of the resultant serialized items of the array? Or add more than one instance of an object with the same name to the main parameter object?

I assume you are using Axis. If that's the case, you need to go and modify your service descriptor in "services.wsdd" (Don't remember on top of my header where it is located in JRun) file where you explicitly map your "ranges " member of the return Object to type "Array".
