Thanks guys.
My question wasn't aimed at knocking Flex on the head. I
know the benefits of Flash all too well and I earn a living off their back; in
this case I was just curious. Even if Flex couldn't do it out of the box maybe
there's a way around it (after all the browser can't do this stuff out of the
box either).
The site in question uses more than just a 'trick' or hack,
and it's also *not* IE only (works nicely in Firefox for me). I also know that
this is not a simple FTP upload because the ActiveX/whatever control also
transcodes the video... that's the neatest part. Whatever they do, however they
do it (and I don't know how) I found it really slick.
Please check it out if you like: www.videoegg.com
The company is a fast growing startup that has attracted
some investment already. Incidentally the seconday competitors listed for
videoegg include Adobe which I see as a good sign.
Anyways, long story short I really like videoegg (and I am
in no shape or form affiliated with the company). The fact that they transcode
everything to Flash Video 7 and 8 also shows that Flash is good for some things
;-)
cheers
Stefan

The usual trick here is a browser feature to get that to work. They
usually have a DIV on the page which contains an FTP:// URI. When you
drag the file into the DIV the browsers own FTP support kicks in and
uploads the file.
I know there are also ActiveX controls people have written for file
upload.
