I use HTTPService to talk to .NET through an aspx page with
Response.ContentType = "text/xml".

It is way simpler that web services (faster? Fewer characters coming
down the line, anyway).

This is completely possible and all you need is the Flex 2 SDK and 
optionally Flex Builder.  You can talk to your ASP.NET application via 
the HTTPService or WebService controls.
