i hit the 'send' too quickly!!
i should've mentioned, my simple LoginPopUp.mxml component when used 
in a test app doesn't have those runtime errors.
eg.
<mx:Application >
 <LoginPopUp />
</mx:Application>

only get the problem when using with PopUpManager.
