Did you explicitly try and access the function stringToDate or did a customized DateField threw that error. If you have tried to call a private method, the compiler would throw and error.
Could you let me know why you need that function to be made public, what are you actually tring to acheive.
It would be good if you could provide a sample chunk of code/ log a bug.
