Due to the schedule and the fact that this isn't a critical problem, we won't be adding this feature before we ship. But I've filed an enhancement request for the next release.
There's a general belief that this is possible using a custom renderer, but I don't know whether anyone has actually done it. Have you tried that approach?

I am working on a flex project where information is being displayed in
a tree. Without the lines, it is very difficult to see what is being
connected. I believe that this feature is very much needed. If this
