Got it to work with this:

var myWindow:IFlexDisplayObject;
var myParent:DisplayObject;

myParent = Application.application.mainPanelView;
myWindow = PopUpManager.createPopUp(myParent,SearchingPopupView, 
true);

Now I just have to find a way to incorperate this without totally 
stepping all over Cairngorm.
