I'm not sure what you mean here by 'Class reference'.
What I've done is, in each view that has a named (with id=) view helper remove 
the helper (<view:shoppingCartViewHelper...) and change all in-file 
references from thisViewHelper to model.thisViewHelper. Then in the Model:
public var shoppingCartViewHelper:ShoppingCartViewHelper;
.
shoppingCartViewHelper= new ShoppingCartViewHelper();

Where ViewHelpers need access to the Model, that becomes a constructor 
argument.

We haven't had to do this yet.
We're just passing things like 'model.listOfThingies' in as arguments to the 
views, which the view then uses as a dataProvider to bind to.
