Hi Ian, I also encountered the same problem with Beta 3 & it seemed like a bug to not be able to use a custom component inside a repeater. I also arrived at the same solution as you i.e. not use a custom component & use Flex components only.
May be this has been fixed in the released version, I haven't tried it yet.
