To switch between debug and release you probably need to uninstall the debug.  So even though the installer claimed to work, it in fact didn’t unregister the debug player which is what you actually had installed.  Only the release player comes from the auto-install.

Subject: [flexcoders] Express autoinstall feature upgrades the Flash Player to 9.0.16 Debug version, why Debug?

Hello flexcoders,

Flash Player 9 is out of Beta and Express Install Flash Player routine specified at the page
http://www.onflex.org/BlinkTag/ worked flawlessly for me
when upgrading my player to version 9 at Win XP SP1 powered machine.

The only nuisance I'd like to highlight is that Flash player 9,0,16 DEBUG version
was installed at my machine ( as Plugin Switcher suggests).

I wonder why Debug version of Flash Player 9 is distributed by Adobe
to user machines?
