from what your describing....your itemRenderer is an 'edit' button.
the itemRenderer is appearing in a datagrid.
save the row index during a datagrid.itemFocusIn event
eg
private var savedIndex:int;
<mx:DataGrid itemFocusIn="saveIndex(event)">
private function saveIndex(event:DataGridEvent):void
{
this.savedIndex = event.rowIndex;
}
and then use that in your code
var evt:DataGridItemEvent = new DataGridItemEvent("editItem");
evt.rowIndex = savedIndex;
var owner:DataGrid = listData["owner"];
owner.dispatchEvent(evt);
