Here’s my opinion:

  1. That is absolutely incorrect.  The only limit on appearance is the imagintion.  If a lot of apps look similar, it may be because they were created by developer-types who are more interested in creating usable functionality than in re-inventing the tree or data grid.  We may need more “outside the box” creative designer types involved.  Flex is still Flash.
  2. I am not a Flash developer, so it is difficult for me to compare.  But as I understand, Flex fits better into enterprise level development processes and methodologies.  No timeline, whatever that is.
  3. It depends.  You do not have to buy anything.  You will probably want Flex Builder, since it is a very productive way to code and compile Flex apps.  If your server-side data requirements are intense, you might want FDS, Flex Data Services.  For normal data access, the RPC functionality is sufficient, and that is included with the framework (free).  Uh, you need Flex developers.
  4. Flex is new.  Flex is dependent on the Flash Player(that is not really a complaint).  Flex componets are immature and limited, compared to ActiveX or even the new “widget” thingies.  Flex Builder is new, there are some bugs, and the “add-in” tools for it do not exist yet.

Subject: [flexcoders] considering a flex purchase

Greetings,

My company is considering switching to flex for our data intensive
flash projects, however i have a few questions before i decide.

1. am i correct in assuming you can only apply a certain 'look'. all
the sample apps ive checked out have the same component look to them.
apparantly just changed w/ css.

2. Whats the main advantage of using flex over a straight flash solution?

3. if i was to buy flex what all do i need? currently we run on a
windows box.

4. flex complaints?

thanks so much.
