[flexcoders] Flex doesn't like well-formed XML

This chokes Flex ...

<mx:XML id="blah">
        <document key="whatever">
                <line width="3"/>
                <text alignment="middle" font="A">Recreation</text>
                <line width="3"/>
                <text/>
                <text alignment="left" font="A"><field key="credits"/> 
Licence</text>
        </document>
</mx:XML>


while this doesn't ...

public var blah:XML =
        <document key="whatever">
                <line width="3"/>
                <text alignment="middle" font="A">Recreation</text>
                <line width="3"/>
                <text/>
                <text alignment="left" font="A"><field key="credits"/> 
Licence</text>
        </document>;


Can anyone tell me why?
