thanx, Doug but that's the thing that's thrown me. in that example, the value is returned directly back to the parent's text box - nice and simple.
but because my textbox is part of an itemRenderer, it's already bound to the dataGrid's datasource. so the itemRenderer can get data from two sources: bound to the ArrayCollection - and - from the titleWindow. The action is append.
