Okay, I figured it out. I should not have been setting the itemRenderer style...I should have been setting the areaRenderer style.
So now I've successfully subclassed AreaRenderer, but I'm now struggling with how I can change the fill color based on the data. I see where the superclass uses getStyle to get the fill color for the current area, but I don't see any method for setting that style from within the AreaRenderer.
