First, thanks so much for your response Ely. That's an excellent point about setting the series array. I hadn't considered that. I guess that's why it's such a good idea to include code snippets. You found an issue I didn't know I had. I've changed the code to build the array and then assign it to the series property.
In my case the area chart is in fact stacked so I assume it's the "known" issue you've referenced in several other posts. I changed it from stacked and it works great. Unfortunately, my requirements are that it be stacked.
