If this functionality is the same as the SQLXML functionality I played with a year or so ago, SQL Server provides an url against which you can make SQL queries.

 

No other server-side code is requiered.  Obviously it is not “direct”, but it appears so.

 

I had a lot of problems with it at the time and gave up, but if they got it working then it will be a very effective answer to “how do I query a database with Flex?”

How does this differ from webservices in general? What make it "Direct"?

 

I think the OP really wants to talk directly to a database and squirt SQL at it inside Flex.

Flex doesn't connect directly to a database. You will need to use a
server-side technology and communicate with it using:

Http service, Web service, Flex Data Service, etc. - just check out the
tutorials on the adobe site and all over the web.
