Empty objects worked--I hadn't tried that.  Thanks.
 
I'd say both the XML nodes missing attributes treatment as zeros and the error on null are bugs (with easy workarounds though).

Hi Sam. That surprises me.  I'm pretty positive you can use Objects that are missing the appropriate property.  I thought XML nodes missing the attribute would work too.  If not, that sounds like a bug.
