Well, you can programmatically update the selectedItems array from the checkbox item renderer.  I am not sure what the interaction  of this will be with the default multi-select behavior, row highlighting, etc.

 

I think you will just have to try it.

Try using itemRenderer inside a DataGridColumn. inside which you can
add a check box.
like
<mx:DataGridColumn....
<mx:itemRenderer>
<mx:Component>
<mx:CheckBox/>

</mx:itemRenderer>
</mx:DataGridColumn>
