Just following up here to say that I've solved my own problem... not
with anything in my code, but by changing the actual webservice I was
calling to do the currency conversion!

I had a sneaking suspicion this may have helped, but as both
xmethods.net and webservicex.com both have crossdomain.xml files setup
correctly, it was a long shot.

Case closed! Hurrrah!
