Coulple more questions:
 
- in flex, 'bar' charts usually mean horizontal, and 'column' charts mean vertical.  Just to be clear, which one are you talking about?
- it sounds like, if you mean horizontal, you want to essentially use an image instead (or in addition to) the standard labels that appear on your veritcal axis. Is that right?
