Also, when you use the work "standalone", what do you mean? Unless you are using Zinc, or apollo, or some other non-browser host, your swf will not be able to access any file on the client.
However, I seem to recall reading that you can access a local file via its url if you know the fully qualified file url. I haven't tested this though, and it may be some Flexbuilder magic that permits it.
