Check out http://www.scalenine.com . I just added a theme based on the soon to be released Yahoo Messenger for Windows Vista. There's a lot of samples and source files that I think could help.
Basically to set a background image for a tab you have to specify a tabStyle in the TabNavigator attributes. In that tabStyle you set the background up, over, down, selected, etc. states.
