Wikipedia has a good quote from W3 on the subject. "According to the World Wide Web Consortium Technical Architecture Group, 'any attempt to forbid the practice of deep linking is based on a misunderstanding of the technology, and threatens to undermine the functioning of the Web as a whole'. [1]" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_linking#Deep_Linking_and_the_HTTP_Pr otocol
Basically (and this really hits on the obvious) deep linking is built into the technology. I tend to agree. On the flip side of the coin there is a little abuse clause: if the deep link points to irrelevant information or points to a page that serves as a consumer advertisement, then this kind of deep linking "threatens to undermine the functioning of the Web as a whole".
