This is what worked for me:
yourDataGrid.addEventListener(ListEvent.ITEM_CLICK, setColumnCopy);
function setColumnCopy(){
_selectedCol = yourDataGrid.columns[event.columnIndex].dataField;
Alert.show(yourDataGrid.selectedItem[_selectedCol]);
}
