First, double check to make sure that verticalScrollPosition and horizontalScrollPosition won't work even if you hide the scrollbars (I don't think they will but I'm not sure). If and when that doesn't work, all scrollbars do is change the scollRect property of a UIComponent. You could manipulate this property directly.
