I went through the same thing. Check out the Lightroom theme I made (I
called it Darkroom so people wouldn't expect all the functionality to
be there).

I got the functionality you're looking for to work, but I had to abuse
some VBoxes and Canvases to get there ;) I would definitely go a
custom route, but I was just looking for a quick way to showcase the
theme without having to make a custom component.
