Instead of changing the alpha property, what about using something like
ColorUtil.adjustBrightness() on the color style to fade the canceled
events?

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml
<http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml> ">

     <mx:Script>
         <![CDATA[
             import mx.utils.ColorUtil;
             [Bindable]
             private var lblColor: uint = 0x202020;
         ]]>
     </mx:Script>

     <mx:Label text="Normal text" color="{lblColor}" />
     <mx:Label text="De-emphasized text"
color="{ColorUtil.adjustBrightness(lblColor, 90)}"/>

</mx:Application>
