With all Flex data-driven controls, you must work with the dataProvider. You can not use the control, because the row item renderers are re-used when the list is scrolled or the data changes.
Loop over the dataProvider. If you are using xml, then the dataProvider is either an XMLList or an XMLListCollection. Both allow for iterating.
