Need to correct (add) one line. Forgot to add the cursor.moveNext():

var cursor:IViewCursor = myAC.createCursor();
var sumPop:int = 0;

var myObject:Object;
while (!cursor.afterLast) {
   myObject = cursor.current;
   sumPop += myObject.population;
   cursor.moveNext();

}
