I recall that it can be done using the bytearray but I am not sure if that code was made public.

Normally you cannot access anything on the local client. Since you say you have used HTTPService to do this, I will assume you are using one of the workarounds.

how can i read an excel file from my local system in my flex application. I have all the data in an excel file which i need to read and draw graphs?

I have used HTTPService to read text files, but this doesn't work with excel files?
