You should understand that there are no "rows" or "columns" unless there is a dataProvider item to produce them.
You should also understand that there is not a 1:1 relationship between data items and rows. The item renderers are recycled and only the visual rows, plus a few for buffering even exist. Perhaps you could use the click and itemClick events to determine your logic.
