Flex 3 is the SDK, core framework, overall initiative, etc. Flex Builder 3 is the IDE.
Both are improved. We are now sim-shipping on both Mac and Win so they will be available at the same time. In FB2 we were waiting for Eclipse to improve to support Mac. FMS is still very much alive, new versions were announced recently in fact! Apollo was the codename, AIR is the real name. Matt, a few questions to you re Flex 3...... can you confirm something to us mere mortals ? Is it Flex 3 or Flex Builder 3 ? From what i understand, Flex Builder 3 (aka the new application development environment) is on the change however the basis for the language (Actionscript 3.0) will remain the same - in effect just more components and a better IDE in addition to the Locale changing stuff etc ? Or have i got it wrong completely? One point that isnt quite clear is that i own Flex Builder 2 (Mac) - Im interested in FB3Beta but can they both coexist on the same system or are there "issues". Re Flex Builder 2, I was really disappointed to wait a year from the release of FB on the PC platform to it appearing on the Mac - I'm wondering are we going to see a similar issue occurring this time - yes I'm aware that the main stumbling block wasn't the flex team but rather functionality missing in the Mac release of Eclipse however I'm playing devils advocate in asking this question. Relating to FMS (Flash Media Server) - Is this a dead animal or is Adobe still pushing the monster (and the god-forsaken price-tag) - I've started to invest heavily in Red5 (since the team are here in the Netherlands and they seem to be very responsive to development needs etc) and wondered if Adobe have any plans on the Flex/FMS front that can be made public. Last question - Why was the name Apollo dropped in favor of AIR ? Is there a habit for TLA's in Adobe and is AIR an acronym for Apollo...... or didn't this sit well with the Marketing team ? Is there a specific version of the flash player that is required for flex 3? Didn't see it on Labs, I was curious as flex 3 has a lot I want to use in an upcoming project, but the site needs to run in 9.0. Not a minor version.
