Hi Tom, turns out it's not the remote objects that are failing - it's
local web services failing to reach the database on a remote server.
Seems like my colleagues firewall is blocking the ports. Thanks anyway.

We have Flex applications talking RemoteObject to a ColdFusion that's
sat 
behind a proxy fine.
