You can build a wide variety of apps using Flex. At my company all the apps we build has nothing to do with multimedia, it is all financial and consumer related applications. I haven't used Visual Studio since 99-2000, but I would say it is just as fast. You can use the design view to drag'n'drop all your components on the empty canvas or you can code everything manually, which is what I do, just habit I guess. It is still faster than working with HTML, I can move around the parts of the app easily and get different looks and then make a final decision on what is best. Also helps to start with Flex 3 and Flex Builder 3, because it has some nice wizards to connect to the server-side.
Also with Thermo coming sometime down the road, your designer will be able to create the look and eventually pass it on to the developer to complete the cerebral part of the application.
